The White House

Washington, D.C. 20500, USA.
Dear President Trump,
USA in 49th Place
In response to yesterday’s comment by the Whitehouse spokesperson suggesting that Canada would benefit from becoming the 51st state, Canadians have many reasons to not become part of the United States. One of the most compelling reasons is that Canadians live longer than Americans.
Life Expectancy. According to the United States CIA Government web page, life expectancy in Canada is ranked as being the 5th longest lifespan in the world. The United States ranks as having the 49th longest lifespan in the world. Canadians are in 5th place because of lifestyle, government programs and policies. These would not be preserved as a 51st state.
Universal Healthcare. In Canada, every citizen receives full medical coverage, regardless of employment status, income, or pre-existing conditions. If a Canadian is sick or injured, there is never a question about getting the best healthcare. While not perfect, the Canadian healthcare system plays a vital role in adding those extra 4 or 5 or even 6 years of extra life for Canadians that Americans simply lose. As a 51st state, we would lose our universal healthcare.
Gun violence. In 2023, the number of U.S. firearm-related deaths was over 46,000 individuals. In contrast, there were 289 firearm-related deaths in Canada for that same year. Canada has common-sense firearm regulations that allow responsible gun ownership for hunting and sport shooting but prohibit machine guns, assault weapons, and handguns.
Medical Bankruptcies. The American Journal of Medicine recently reported that 62.1% of all American bankruptcies were classified as “medical bankruptcies”. As a 51st state, Canadians would suddenly experience “medical bankruptcies”.
Yes, Canadians pay higher taxes than Americans, but ….we get value. The extra value is four or five more years of life to enjoy our families, our grandchildren, and healthier lives. In fact, “AI” says that average Canadians live 6 years longer than Americans. Canadians will not forfeit the very standards that allow us to live longer and maintain our 5th longest lifespan position on the CIA list.
Rather than proposing to annex Canada, perhaps a more reasonable goal for the United States would be to increase life expectancy of Americans to catch up with Canada. The Canadian formula is not complicated, and we would be happy to share the formula with you. No charge.
The United States of America should not be 49th on any list…. especially the life span list. Let me know if I can help.
Sincerely,
Bill Casey

On average, Canadians tend to live longer than Americans.
As of the most recent data:
Life expectancy in Canada: Around 82–83 years
Life expectancy in the United States: Around 76–77 years
On average, Canadians live 6 years longer than Americans
. An American is 15.6 times more likely to be killed by a firearm than a Canadian.
. Another analysis said 66.5% of bankruptcies were due directly caused by medical expenses
