United Nations Resolution 181…..
A bit more detail:
On November 29, 1947, a majority of the votes at the General Assembly of the United Nations voted to divide the western part of the region known as the “Lands of Palestine” into a Jewish state and an Arab state. Jews, Arabs and Christians occupied the “Lands of Palestine” for thousands of years.
On May 14th, 1948, Israeli leaders accepted the results of the vote and declared the Independence of the Jewish State of Israel.
Palestinians have never accepted the vote held at the United Nations that divided the “Land of Palestine”.
It was an interesting vote at the United Nations.
-
33 countries voted in favor of splitting the region known as “the British Mandate of Palestine” into two states.
-
13 countries voted against splitting the region. No country in the Middle East region voted in favor and in fact all countries in the region voted against.
-
10 countries abstained
Palestinian residents including native Jews and native Arabs, did not have a vote. It’s strange to me that countries like Iceland, Paraguay, Canada and the Ukraine would have a vote on splitting the “Land of Palestine” but neither the Palestinian Jews nor the Palestinian Arabs had a vote. All Middle East neighbouring countries voted against U.N. Resolution 181.
Attached is a 1945 map of the area prior to the U.N. Partition Resolution 181. The “Land of Palestine” was made a “British Mandate” in 1923 by the League of Nations. By 1947, the British wanted to terminate their “Palestinian Mandate” and left the future of the region to the United Nations. The result was the vote on Resolution 181.
