Hospice Society Volunteer, Gerald Shearer, was recognized by Bill for his volunteer contributions. Gerald makes small wooden

HUGs that have inspiring messages inserted.

These HUGs are meant for those individuals or family members living with or dying from a terminal illness.

Gerald Shearer, and his family use the HUGs as a way to keep the memory of his wife alive, and to share an expression of comfort with palliative care clients in the area.

Picture above (from Right to Left) - Board Member Meg Connors, Gerald Shearer, and Bill Casey

Photo credit to Serena Lewis, Executive Director, Hospice Society

Shearer, with prompting from his wife Helen decided to cut out the word HUG in his workshop as a way of expressing his appreciation to staff on the Palliative Care Team at the Colchester Regional Hospital. Ms. Shearer died in 2005, and since her death, Gerald has maintained this work in his workshop. He continues to cut out the pine HUGS, donating them to the Hospice Society. These HUGS are used by staff and volunteers who work with Palliative Care clients as a means to identify a heartfelt sense of connection.

These HUGS appear to be therapeutic at many levels, for the clients that receive them, as an extension of care and concern, for the palliative nurses, social workers and volunteers who share them, for children and adults who are supporting the painting and message of these symbols, and for Gerald and his family as they grieve the loss of a very significant woman in their lives.

Executive Director, of the Hospice Society, Serena Lewis states “that she was touched by this story at many levels, especially by the importance of finding a healthy way of keeping a wife/ mother’s memory alive. Grieving is a difficult process and finding ways to cope with the wide range of emotions can be challenging”.  Lewis is pleased that there are members throughout the Colchester East Hants area that are taking an interest in this story, and its meaning and Bill was pleased to be on hand to recognize Mr. Shearer's efforts.

Bill offers his sincere congratulations to the Dempsey family of Amherst on the occasion of Brandon Dempsey being declared a brain tumour survivor.

Bill received this great news from Jennifer Dempsey, Brandon's mother, late last week after doctors at the Isaac Walton Killam (IWK) Hospital in Halifax decided that they now cautiously consider Brandon to be tumour free.

Thanks to improved diagnostic imaging, what was thought to be a residual tumour in Brandon for the past five years is now thought to be a collection of blood vessels.

Bill is looking forward to speaking directly with the Dempsey family about all of this exciting news on his next visit to Amherst, and will continue to advocate for further improvements for Brain Tumour research in Canada.

Above is a recent picture of Brandon meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper. (Jennifer Dempsey, and Bill were also in attendance for this important meeting).

Here are two clips of Bill in the House Clip A, Clip B. One clip is audio only, and the other is a video clip. (Both clips are best viewed and heard with the Real Audio program). The transcript from Monday is also below.

Mr. Speaker, yesterday the government made a historic announcement that we would finally clean up the Sydney tar ponds. Could the government tell the House why we can be assured that this will finally help alleviate the worries of the residents of Sydney by resolving this longstanding health issue?
After 13 years of inaction on the file, finally we have a plan that follows the recommendations of the panel to use the safest option, involving solidification, containment and capping of contaminated soil. There will be a monitoring process to follow.
The residents of Sydney have waited far too long. They got nothing from the party opposite. We are doing something. We are getting things done to protect the environment and to protect health in Sydney. Across the country, this government is getting it done.

December 12th was also a whirlwind day for Bill's guests, Jennifer and Brandon Dempsey from Amherst, Nova Scotia.

Jennifer originally met with Bill in April, 2005 to make him aware of how her family had been affected by Brandon's brain tumour, and met with Bill in her capacity as representative for the Canadian Alliance of Brain Tumour Organizations (CABTO) and the Brain Tumour Research Assistance Information Network, better known as B.R.A.I.N Child Atlantic to discuss the need for better statistics collection for benign brain tumours.

The pictures below were taken yesterday during meetings with Prime Minister Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay. Brandon and Jennifer were also introduced to the Federal Minister of Health Tony Clement yesterday.

Other CABTO Officials including Maureen Daniels, Femma Norton and Pam del Maestro also made the trip to Ottawa to attend the debate on M-235 and Bill very much appreciated their attendance.

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotians take great pride in their shared history and also look to the future with great confidence and determination.

Canada's new government has worked with the Government of Nova Scotia by investing close to $72 million in various initiatives through ACOA to help build a strong and competitive economy in our province. These investments are helping to make communities stronger, spur business growth, encourage innovation, and research and development.

Our government has also invested $1.8 million through the innovative communities fund for community based projects and $23 million through the municipal rural infrastructure program to help communities upgrade their civic infrastructure.

I am proud to say that the Government of Canada is working closely with the Government of Nova Scotia in getting things done for Nova Scotians, and once again, I welcome the delegation to Ottawa."

Casey applauds local Cosmetology students for responding positively to Dawson College tragedy

(Notes and pictures regarding this effort have been provided by Bev Doucette, Cosmetology Faculty, NSCC Cumberland Campus)

The Cosmetology students of NSCC Cumberland Campus responded to the recent tragedy at Dawson College in Montreal with a special project.  They created a banner with the Canadian flag attached, around it they placed words of comfort in colorful paper. Campus students, staff, faculty and administration signed the banner in a show of support during Dawson's  time of crisis.

In addition, the Cosmetology students  created a portfolio consisting of a personal page from each of the programs and departments within Cumberland Campus. There was a dedication page followed by poems, signatures, letters and wishes for peace and healing to the entire Dawson College family.

The students chose the Canadian flag, donated by Bill Casey MP, to represent the unity across the country as people showed an outpouring of support. It also signified that we are one....and when one hurts we all hurt.

The provincial flag, donated by Murray Scott MLA, was sent to identify Nova Scotia specifically in our personal offering of sympathy and well wishes. It was an honor to work with these students and to see their compassion, empathy and love for others move them to make this project a success.

Respectfully,
Bev Doucette

Russian Ambassador to Speak at Debert Military Museum, February 2006

November 23, 2005

Ottawa– Representatives of the Debert Military Museum joined Bill Casey, M.P. yesterday at the Russian Embassy to review historical photos of Russian veterans during WWII. The archival photos will soon be on special display at the Museum as a reminder of the wartime partnership between Canada and Russia, and the Allied Victory in Europe.

Casey formally thanks Ambassador Mamedov and his Third Secretary Denis Kolokoltsev for their continued hospitality and friendship, and the representatives of the Debert Military Museum including President Sheila Crowe and Directors Blaine Fisher and Sherry Poehl-Fisher who travelled from the riding to view the photographs in person.

As part of this event, the Debert Military Museum will also play host to His Excellency, Russian Ambassador Georgiy Mamedov. The Ambassador agreed to speak about the struggles of Russian families and soldiers during WWII and the impact to his nation of loosing over 30 million lives in the conflict.

“There is no doubt that Canada sacrificed much during the Second World War to help achieve victory, but this event will be crucial in understanding how our wartime allies in Russia survived and overcame terrible losses. It strikes me that the Russian people lost roughly the entire population in Canada today. I hope our Veterans as well as young people from the riding come and listen to Ambassador Mamedov” said Casey following yesterday’s meeting.

Casey added that, “Ambassador Mamedov speaks with great passion and emotion about the terrible losses incurred during World War II. His presentation will be one that is remembered by all that hear it.”

The photographs will be displayed at the Debert Military Museum for 6 months to start, with the possibility that they may become part of the permanent Museum collection.

The community will be kept apprised of the event details as they become finalized and Casey hopes that many will take the time to see them. (Pictures from the meeting yesterday are attached below).

November 16, 2005 - Nappan Experimental Farm, Casey meets with Atlantic Agriculture Ministers in Ottawa

Member of Parliament Bill Casey met with the Honourable David Alward, Minister of Agriculture for New Brunswick, the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Agriculture for Newfoundland, the Honourable Chris D’Entremont, Minister of Agriculture for Nova Scotia and Deputy Minister Wayne Hooper for Prince Edward Island regarding the future fate of the Nappan Experimental Farm.

Casey updated the Ministers and was seeking their support for maintaining Nappan Experimental Farm as a beef research site. Casey questioned many of the items received through Access to Information regarding the reasons for closing the Farm and the proposed potential savings.

(Picture Above, from left to right, the Honourable Chris A. d'Entremont, Minister of Agriculture for Nova Scotia , Bill Casey, M.P., the Honourable David Alward, Minister of Agriculture for New Brunswick, and the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Agriculture for Newfoundland and Labrador)

The M.P. has disagreed with the Federal Government’s proposal that research on Atlantic beef can be done in Lacombe, Alberta or in Ontario.  The Ministers agreed that conditions in Nappan with respect to feed and pasturing cannot be duplicated in Alberta or Ontario.  They also discussed the fact that closing Nappan would also mean that the Maritime Beef Testing Station would be forced to close as well.

Casey asked the Ministers to intervene at this crucial moment to make sure the Federal Minister is made aware of how important Atlantic beef research is and how important the Nappan Experimental Farm is to our industry.

The Honourable Andy Mitchell, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Foods is meeting with Casey on Friday morning to discuss the outcome of the recent consultation meeting in Kentville regarding the future of agriculture research in Atlantic Canada. The future of Nappan will also be on the agenda.

I was pleased that Minister Mitchell accepted my invitation to visit the Nappan Experimental Farm to see the facilities personally. I look forward to more discussions with the Minister about the future of the Nappan Experimental Farm, and the important agricultural research that is done at this site.

This picture was taken during Minister Mitchell's visit to Nappan. Working with the community and RCMP in Stewiacke to reduce crime

The following picture was given to me from a constituent from Stewiacke whose trailer was vandalized heavily this year. This is one example of other acts of vandalism and theft that constituents say has become a problem in the community.

In an effort to solve the problem, community representatives from Stewiacke hosted a well attended meeting on September 20, 2005 to discuss challenges associated with youth crime and the Youth Criminal Justice Act, RCMP policing in the community, and how best to deal with crime in general. I was pleased to attend and participate at this meeting, which also included representatives of Crime Stoppers.

Here is a copy of my article which appeared in the latest edition of the Stewiacke Newsletter.

In regards to the temporary RCMP building in Stewiacke, I am also pleased to report that following a recent  meeting with Public Works Minister Scott Brison and Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan, and following discussions with the RCMP, needed renovations will begin between October 5th and 15th. I will update the community as progress continues on this RCMP building.

Bill Casey meets with Premier Lord

September 13, 2005

Amherst - MP Bill Casey met with Premier Bernard Lord yesterday to provide him with the status of the Acadian Village of Beaubassin.  Although the site of the Village is located in Nova Scotia, it is a very important part of Acadian history and is tied directly to nearby Fort Beausejour National Park.

Casey provided some historical documents to Premier Lord and confirmed that the site was designated a National Historic Site in June.  Also, Casey confirmed that the Government of Canada had purchased the land and is now preparing to plan for the future of this critical part of Canadian history.  Although this is a Government of Canada project, Mr. Lord will pass on the documents to the Ministers that could be involved in such an undertaking, and agreed that this is an important Acadian site, which should receive more attention.

Casey and Premier Lord discussed the possibility of bringing together Fort Beausejour and Beaubassin as one project, which represents the history of Canada all in one location.   Casey says " this site was shared by the French, the Acadians, the English and our Aboriginals.  No site in Canada involves an Acadian Village, a French Fort and an English Fort, all together.  It is an opportunity to showcase our history in one location."   All parties should have a role in the planning for this exciting project”.

The photograph shows Mr. Lord and Mr. Casey examining the infrared photograph of the 42 foundations of Acadian buildings burned down in 1750.

Spencer's Island Boat Launch. A community repair job. August 23, 2005

I recently requested repairs for this boat launch and ramp from Fisheries and Ocean Canada and was told that the site is the responsibility of the County.

Warden Keith Hunter and Councillor Ratchford Merriam and I have discussed this issue and I have asked that the County give partial funding to the community to complete the job.

I also committed to gather any resources that I am able to assist the County in completing this repair project, and on August 23rd I was joined by MLA Murray Scott, Laurie Curry, Charles Reid and Dwight MacGillivary to help mend the boat ramp. Here are some pictures from our community repair job:

With the steel in place, we will now proceed with leveling the ramp and reinforcing the structure with huge rocks.

Special thanks must be sent to Dwight MacGillivary for helping cut the steel beams, to Laurie Curry for donating the use of his tractor, to Charles Reid who donated the use of his jacks to help us line up the boat ramp, and to MLA Murray Scott for his time and labour. I was happy to provide the steel beams for this project.

Improvements to Veterans Independence Program (VIP)

The Minister of Veterans Affairs recently announced that the Veterans Independence Program will be extended to include all caregivers and widows of veterans who were in receipt of services since the VIP program began in 1981.

If you were the primary caregiver of a veteran who received VIP housekeeping and/or grounds maintenance services at the time of the veterans death or entrance into a long-term care facility or you have a continuing health need for these housekeeping/grounds maintenance services due to health reasons, the government has a toll-free number available for more information

1-800-443-0382

Veterans Affairs Canada has also created an online question and answer sheet in regards to the new enhancements:

M.P. Bill Casey is pleased with the Government's recent announcement, that the VIP Program will now cover all widows and caregivers of all veterans who were in receipt of services since the VIP program began in 1981 (please see the newsroom for more comments from M.P. Casey).

Most Effective MP

"Conservative MP Bill Casey gets the nod for his tireless investigation into Canada's fleet of used submarines. Although he is not the Conservative defence critic, Casey had been investigating problems with the fleet years before the fire onboard HMCS Chicoutimi, which resulted in the death of seaman.

After the fire happened, Casey had all types of information and documents about potential problems with the fleet available for reporters while the Defence Department was reluctant to speculate on the cause.

"Bill's a digger," says fellow Nova Scotia Conservative Peter MacKay. "He took a personal interest in this file a number of years ago. He has put a great deal of personal effort forth in visiting these submarines. Talking to those individuals aboard, so I think he deserves a lot of credit."

"It shows that an individual MP can make a tremendous difference in a story like this. And his timing is impeccable."
