Clarification requested from MacKay regarding new Atlantic Accords deal comments

October 31, 2007

Ottawa   During Question Period yesterday, Bill Casey, M.P. asked for clarification about opposite statements made by Ministers about impending legislation to implement the new Atlantic Accord deal.

Casey stated that the Minister of Defence said recently that legislation will be tabled this fall, but also pointed out that MacKay’s cabinet colleague, the Honourable Marjory Lebreton, Leader of the Government in the Senate, said that there is no legislation to be tabled, and that if individuals believed there would be, this was not what the Prime Minister and others had agreed to.

Minister MacKay has responded that Casey does not have his facts straight, but Casey was reading LeBreton’s comments from parliamentary transcripts dated October 17th.

M.P. Casey believes that the absence of a signed agreement for this new deal is causing a great deal of confusion for parliamentarians, MLAs, the media, and for the people of Nova Scotia.
