Casey comments on absence of Atlantic Accords in Throne Speech

October 17, 2007

Ottawa  Member of Parliament Bill Casey today made the following statement about the absence of the Atlantic Accords in the Speech from the Throne:

“The purpose of the Throne Speech is to outline upcoming legislation for a new session of Parliament. In the recent letter from Minister Baker of Nova Scotia to Minister Flaherty of the Government of Canada, Mr. Baker says that Mr. Flaherty has agreed ‘…to make the necessary technical amendments…’ to the 2007 budget, which will then respect the Atlantic Accords.

Although the Throne Speech is supposed to mention upcoming legislation, there is no mention of these promised amendments that would restore the Accords.

Without this legislation, the letters exchanged between the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia loose their effect and the Accords will remain broken.”

Casey intends to raise this issue during Question Period today. For further information, please contact the Ottawa office at (613) 992-3366.
