Public Service Commission to submit proposal to Casey

November 29, 2002

Ottawa - Bill Casey, MP for Cumberland Colchester, met today with Officials from Public Service Commission (PSC), and continued to press for improvement to current hiring practices.

Specifically, Casey questioned how residents from one town, Amherst, Nova Scotia could qualify for a job in Moncton, New Brunswick when everyone else in the Province of Nova Scotia was not eligible.  The position, advertised this week in the Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency (ACOA), was also open to eight counties in New Brunswick.  Casey says, “This hiring practice contravenes any semblance of fairness or equity and it must change.”  The PSC Officials agreed to investigate and report back to Casey.

Casey also pointed out to the Officials that the practice of hiring for Federal Position in Ottawa should not only be limited to candidates from the National Capital Region.

Casey commented, “Not only is the practice is unfair and inequitable, it is simply poor public policy to have only resident of a small portion of Canada developing policy and plans” Casey added “Further, this policy will not reflect to needs or challenges of the Atlantic, the Prairies, or the West.  This explains why so much of current policy is inappropriate.”
