Support needed for Canadian Veterans and retired RCMP members

November 8, 2007

Ottawa   In support of Veterans and retired RCMP members, Bill Casey, M.P. recently submitted Private Members Motion M-362 in order to raise awareness of concerns over alleged pension “claw backs”.

M-362 calls on three federal ministers to convene an independent panel of experts to address the long-standing concern of Veterans and retired RCMP members that they were not fully briefed on the effect of integrating the Canada Pension Plan with their pensions during the 1960s. The motion reads:

“M-362 — October 16, 2007 — Mr. Casey (Cumberland—Colchester—Musquodoboit Valley) — That, in the opinion of the House, the Ministers of National Defence, Public Safety and the Minister responsible for the Treasury Board should convene without delay an independent panel including pension and legislative experts with a mandate of ascertaining if the integration of the Canada Pension Plan and the Canadian Forces Superannuation Act, and the integration of the Canada Pension Plan with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police pension Plan in 1966 has indeed produced the alleged “claw back” to the pensions of both the Canadian Armed Forces Veterans and former Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and to ascertain if members of both groups were fully informed and briefed on the consequences or merits of pensions integration, and present their findings on this issue to Parliament and to the pensioners of these groups in an expeditious manner.”

Speaking from Amherst, Nova Scotia, Casey made the following statement about his Private Members Motion in support of Canada’s Veterans and retired RCMP Members:

“The M-362 motion calls on the government to address this longstanding issue of our Veterans and retired RCMP members, and I can think of no better time for the government to take action than during this week of remembrance.”

Casey hopes that his motion will compliment the work already being done for Veterans and RCMP members by other Members of Parliament and looks forward to receiving feedback on this important issue.
